3.7 Alternate reference Points for Transit Consideration

3.7.1 Natal Ascendant: As brought out in the previous chapter, transit considerations from natal Moon is given over-riding preference over any other reference point/ lagna. However Moon sign transit considerations may not cover all requirements like cases of twins or persons born within few hours of each other on a given date & place. For such purposes, our classics have stated that “Sarvesh Lagnesh Vapisastu” which means “all lagnas are available”. Some important alternate reference points/ lagnas and their effects are given in succeeding Para.

3.7.2 The ascendant fixes the order and lordship of the houses in a horoscope. A planet when the lord of a Trikone house (1st, 5th or 9th) induces a benefic modification to the likely results of transit of the planet. In Vedic astrology, the use of ascendant as lagna for transit considerations is next only to that of natal Moon sign. If the Moon has been referred as “Prana or seed”, the ascendant is praised as “soul or fruits”. In case of fiery ascendants-Aries, Leo & Sagittarius, neither Moon nor Saturn have lordship of any Trikone house. Therefore the native with these ascendants are likely to have harsher Sade Sati periods than in case of other nine ascendants.

Table No. 10: Benefic Places from Natal Ascendant

Saturn

3.7.3 The Sun: Another usually adopted reference point/ lagna for transit considerations is the Sun. This is used extensively by western astrologers. But this presents a situation where some planet may become excessive malefic and the same planet by other system may be highly benefic or neutral. See the results below:

Table No. 11: Benefic Places from natal Sun

3.7.4 Again when the effects of the dashas are to be studied, we take the house where the dasha lord is placed as the lagna for that pursuit. Similarly if one wants to study the effects of a particular house, Shri Mantreshwar suggested to treat that house as lagna. The result of a particular house will be influenced by a transiting planet when it is near to its most effective point depending upon its functional nature whether benefic or malefic. Considering the triple transit triggering influence, the benefic or malefic impact of transit planets is to be seen on all natal and transit planets, including functional malefics and functional benefics, and the benefic or malefic impact of natal planets is also to be seen on both transit functional malefics and transit functional benefics. The things governed by the planets would be their general and particular significations. Similarly, when the impact is on the most effective point of any house, the significations of the house occupied and house(s) aspected would be influenced by the transiting planet.

3.7.5 Please also note that planets give poor/ evil results when they transit the following positions from their own natal positions.

The Sun: 5th House, The Moon: 8th house, Mars 7th House, Mercury: 4th House, Jupiter: 3rd House, Venus: 6th House, Saturn: 1st House, Rahu: 9th House.

3.8 Conclusion

3.8.1 The transit results are general in nature and should never be predicted without reference to the natal horoscope. The transit chart for any native is supplementary to his natal chart. Pattern of the natal chart always determines the value of transiting planet. The classics have stressed the primacy of Natal Moon sign as reference point in ascertaining transit results. However the use of alternate reference point for specific uses is also permitted.

3.8.2 During transit, the points of planetary returns i.e. the time when a planet comes back to its precise natal position, indicates a new cycle in a native’s life. The transit results of outer planets-Mars, Jupiter, Saturn & Nodes, are more effective than inner planets-Sun, Moon, Mercury & Venus, since the period of inner planets are for short duration or fleeting only. The retrogression of planets makes their effects more lasting & strong as such planets may transit over a position in a house three times during their transit. However transits of planets through various houses indicate general trends which should be read invariably with the basic promise inherent in natal horoscope and the dasha syndrome.
