Encyclopedia of Vedic Astrology: Yogas:- Arishta Yogas, Chapter XIV, Part – 1

Dr. Shanker Adawal

1. Introduction

Arishta is a Sanskrita word meaning loss, suffering, or deprivation of any kind. So far we have discussed yogas/ combinations of planets, which indicate the brighter side of life. However our general experience suggests that grief is the substance of which life is generally made of. Wherever one looks, one finds people unhappy for variety of reasons. People often wonder why they are the victims of the cruel & merciless fate, when seemingly they have done no wrong. Our ancient seers have suggested the theory of “cause & effect”. Whatever we are or face (success/ failures, loss/ gain, happiness/ sorrow etc) is the effect of causes already done through our own past Karmas. Astrology is a divine science which helps us to see albeit sketchily, through affliction of various houses in our horoscope, what and to which extent we have to endure and what can be overcome in our life.

Arista Yoga is a major group of yoga formed by the house rulerships. This is basically the yoga of suffering and misfortune. Usually the suffering is physical, but could be mental also at times. The combination of the rulers of the most difficult (Trika or Dusthana-6, 8 & 12th) houses are combined with the ruler of the other auspicious houses, this brings the suffering to the individual. Again any combination of these house rulers would constitute Arista Yoga. These combinations nullify auspicious results and produce hardships. Sometimes, through our suffering, spirituality may also sprout. Therefore this yoga will produce generally sufferings, but at times generates spiritual opportunities as well.
