Charms Talismans and Spells: Omens As Remedies, Chapter XVII, Part - 1

Chapter No. 17

Dr. Shanker Adawal

Omens, which are also known as shakuns in India, are also a remedy for a lay man, if observed properly; there is no need to do any spell. They are considered sign of good or evil fortune. Omens are considered as nature’s warning for, good or bad, forthcoming incidents or events. But it is seen that people have a little knowledge about them or if they are aware of it, they consider them as a superstition. It is also a sort of remedy, if observed properly, but it is often neglected.

Classics say that a person who is practicing astrology or any other related field should have sound knowledge of omens. It is seen that such persons give reply to the quarries of the native without consulting any thing. These are the natures caution to him. We think one who ignores this aspect of astrology, sometimes fails in answering the questions put to him by the native. Suppose a native puts a quarry to the astrologer and somebody sneezes simultaneously, the nature has given the answer in negative.

Omens are of many kinds. Nature warns through birds, animals through twitching of body parts, through voice, sound and its modulation through nose moles etc. Mahrishi Siddhanta has given a detailed study of omens in his work Horasara. In this chapter we would discuss about those omens in a compartmental manner. Mahrishi said that any strike by a weapon, squabble, fall from a precipice, crying etc. is declared as bad omens at the commencement of the predictions by the astrologer. They indicate death, separation or destruction of property. Likewise a snake or a chameleon, an alligator, a leaper or a naked mendicant etc, appear on the scene it is untoward even a reference or talk about them is indicative of evil and certainly forebodes danger or disaster.
