Mars & Mercury: Mercury in Various Houses, Chapter XX, Part - 11

Continuation…

Dr. Shanker Adawal

My Thoughts: Though Kalyanavarma and some others have referred to the person’s interest in the occult, I believe that this is a subject dealt with by Venus. What Mercury can do is bestow the power to dispel the influences of other planets. Just about every ancient astrologer has made some reference to a person’s ability to have children and this proves that it is incorrect to brand Mercury a gender-neutral planet. Some astrologers have made references to the person’s maternal uncle dying but this appears very bizarre as a person’s influence on his maternal uncle’s life is governed in the Sixth House from which the Fifth House is actually in the twelfth place. Moreover, it is absolutely incorrect to ascribe a property like death or destruction to a planet like Mercury, which is among the most auspicious and beneficial planets. Yavanmath’s reference to the mother’s death when the person is five years old and Hillajaatak’s contention that the person’s mother dies when he is 26 are proved incorrect by simple observation. In fact, the mother’s death is something that is not even considered when examining the influence of any planet in the Fifth House. The only circumstance in which this could occur is if the Sun is in the Fourth House when Mercury is in the Fifth House. The benefits ascribed by astrologers in this space are seen only in masculine signs while the negative traits are visible in feminine signs. The propensity of having daughters and no sons are usually seen when the planet is in Gemini or Libra.

My Experience: If Mercury is in the Fifth House in a masculine sign, the person has a melodious voice and a sharp intellect. He completes his education rapidly often as early as 20 to 23 years of age. The person can be a successful writer, poet, dramatist or essayist. He writes on science. In Gemini, Libra or Aquarius, the person has no children or only a few at the most. If he is a writer, he settles or viewing his works as his children. He is powerful in his community. He is soft spoken, charismatic and an introvert. If Mercury is in Aries, Leo or Sagittarius, the person has a bit of a temper and is stubborn. He is attracted towards law and justice matters. He is sober and community oriented. If Mercury is in Taurus, Virgo or Capricorn the person is of a crooked bent of mind. His education is incomplete and he is quarrelsome by nature. He can pick up an argument on imaginary issues. He is given to taunting people. He has few children and they are equally evil in nature. He is practical and tends to keep himself in the background pushing others ahead of himself in any work. If Mercury is in Cancer, Scorpio or Pisces the person has many children. The first three or five and the last is a son. He is not reliable or trustworthy. He dwells on other people’s shortcomings. If Mercury is in Aries, Leo or Sagittarius, the person excels in mathematics, law, metallurgical astrology, dance, phrenology etc. In Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn, the person does well in elemental sciences, study of the Evidence Act and in graphology. In Gemini, Libra and Aquarius, the person does well meteorology, medicine, community health, teaching his own mother tongue and in elemental sciences. He does well dealing with the Stamp Act, grammar and oral examinations. In Cancer, Scorpio or Pisces, the person does well in typing, fingerprint examination, macrology, and wordplay. Mercury in an exalted position is essential for a person to succeed in his career.

Mercury in the Sixth House

Acharya and Gunakar: Ashatruhu. He has no enemies.

Kalyanavarma: Vaadavivaade kalahe nityajito vyaadhitaha shashte budhe. Aalaso vinashtakopo nishtthuravaakyosti paribhootaha. He is constantly defeated in arguments and debate. He is always ill, lazy and free of anger. He speaks harshly and is always being humiliated by others.
