The physical features of Mars
In ancient lore, Mars is called the son of the Earth. The Sun is viewed as the father and the Moon, the mother. This is why some characteristics of the Sun and the Moon are always seen in Mars. This is what the ancient astrologies had to say about Mars:
Acharya: Shareeralakshanah vakraha naatyuchyou raktagauraha. It is never very exalted. It is slightly silver-gold and more reddish. It appears to be a blend of the redness of the Sun and the silver-gold colouring of the Moon. Satvakunjaha – Its property is Satva or pure. Kshitisuto neta – It is a general. It is very red. Samajjaa bhoumaha – It rules the head. Place – fire, Garments – burnt, Colour – golden, Season – summer, taste – bitter.
Kalyanavarma: Chetaha satvamdharaajaha, Kumaraha senapatihi. Direction – south, Deity – Kartikeya, Gender – masculine, caste – Khasatriya, taste – bitter, place – fire, garments – shabby, metal – gold, time – day, season – summer, scriptures – samaveda, thus are the characteristics of Mars.
Baidhyanaath: Satvam bhaumaha, kujoneta, saraktagauram, taaragraho dharaasutaha. This planet is similar to a star. It is mostly malefic. Almost inevitably it appears from the rear. Kshmaajo chatushpado. It is square. Kujo bhavati shailaat visancharantaha – it rules over mountains and jungles. Baalo dharaajaha – It is a child – aaraha shaakhaadhipaha – It is the lord of branches. Colour – pale (bloodless), complexion – golden, season – summer, place – fire, location – from Lanka to the Krishna river (present day Sri Lanka and Deccan plateau), caste – Khastriya, property – tama or impure, gender – masculine, tempo – fast, taste – bitter, time of day – day. Its gaze is cast upwards. Shanina mahisuthaha. Mars is always defeated by Saturn in a clash.
The positions is which Mars is powerful: Aaraha swavaara navabhaagachagaanavarge. Meenaalinkumbhabhrigalumbarayamineeshu. Vakre cha yaamyadishi raashimukhe balaadachyo. Meene kulirabhavane cha sukham dadaati. On Mondays, in the Ninth phase, in the ascendant, in Pisces, Scorpio, Aquarius, and Aries. At night, when it is retrograde, in the southern direction and when it is in the beginning of a sign. It gives much happiness in Pisces and Cancer.
The illnesses brought on by Mars are: Peenabeejakafashastrapaavaka granthi roogvrina daridra jaamayaihi. Veerasho vagana bhairavaadibhirbhitimaashu kurute dharasutaha.
Cough, suffering caused by the scriptures or fire, boils, eruptions and pimples, tumours and abscesses, arthritis, ailments caused by extreme poverty and possession by the demons that surround Lord Shiva in his form of Bhairav.
