Profession from the Position of Planet Saturn Part 1

Dr. Shanker Adawal

Part 1

Saturn is the causative planet of Career (Profession) the indicator of Karma – in this cosmic world. He himself will never harm any one in this world, whether he may be malefic sign or in benefic sign who offers both good and bad effects accommodating the combinations of other planets which is based on the native’s past Karma.

Sun, Moon, Mars and (D-Tail) or Ketu are enemies to Saturn but the Sun and Saturn are not major enemies (as may be the case of a father and son relationship because Sun is light (Tejas). Generally father may object the insufficient works of his son but when son is powerful and is in ruling places, father is weak and aged. In such cases, father cannot or may not be able to over rule his son. This is generally considered as enemies with sufficient misunderstandings.

As we have stated in previous lessons Moon is mind which is not constant. But the Saturn is the causative planet of work. Whenever the combination of Moon and Saturn is there or comes, this denotes fluctuating mind who cannot complete the work on account of inconsistency of mind. Hence Moon and Saturn are enemies to one another or in other words fluctuating mind (Moon) will never complete the (Saturn) work.

Saturn and Mars

They are the enemies to the one another because Saturn is the causative planet to work. Mars is the causative planet of egoism (Ahankara Tatwa – Dhi- Pathi- Angaraka).

Any worker will never complete the work, if he is having egoism (Saturn is work and Mars is egoism). Hence they are considered as enemies of another.

In many cases this combination (Saturn + Mars) appears in the native’s chart will change the career and who will overcome enemies in their career without fail.

Saturn and Dragon Tail (Ketu) are enemies, because Ketu (D-Tail) is the causative planet of monks, saints and liberation. These people will never be interested in work or Karma. Saturn is the causative planet of work, profession – Ketu is Saint – therefore one another will never have good understanding.
The natives having this combination are not interested in hard work and they are desperate in life also. They will be interested in philosophy and saintly life.

Saturn in Aries

The native having Saturn in Aries in his birth chart indicates native will have success from metals, engineering type of profession or connected to the central government, higher departments or authorities – he will shine in his career but the lower and higher income and status depends according to the combination of other planets.

Saturn in Taurus

The sign of Venus, money-Taurus is luxury. The native will earn by soft work or in the concern where luxury goods are means of earnings through transactions.

Saturn in Gemini

The native will earn through his intellect, commercial transactions, business enterprises or social and general activities, intellectual ways.

Saturn in Cancer

The native of this chart will come up from the traveling lines, water, liquid career connecting to the traveling, arts, (Kala or through the things water is connected).

Weather comes and goes as streams and rivers. The native will have to overcome worries in his career, inconsistency of work and financial commitments are the cause of his worries.

Know About Kalasarpa Yoga Part 3

Dr. Shanker Adawal

Part 3

The greatest general of his day, he was Commander-in-Chief of the English armies and also ambassador to Holland, whose armies he had commenced, but it was not all sunshine. In cession, beginning in 1701. The Rahu Dasa had commenced, but it was not all sunshine. In 1692, he had been deprived of all his offices and temporarily imprisoned in the London Tower and did not return to royal favour for six years. But in 1702 he was highly honoured by the Queen as a Knight of the Garter and Made military commander. At the end of 1711, however, he was dismissed again from all offices and went abroad into exile. Three years later, he was back in favour and resumed his military offices. Then ill-health set in and he died at the end of June 1722 after his third stroke. Rahu aspected by Jupiter and in the 10th from the Moon elevated him, but his Kalasarpa Yoga caused breaks in his career.

The horoscope of Prince Charles Edward Stuart (“Bonnie Prince Charlie”) of the House of Stuart, shows how Kalasarpa Yoga finally put an end to this royal line.

This so-called “Young Pretender” to the English throne was the son of the “Old Pretender”, half-brother of Queen Anne, who aspired to become King James III. James, the Old Pretender, had himself made an unsuccessful attempt to become king in 1708. Then the Earl of Mar tried for him in 1715, but also failed. Prince Charles Edward then tried (for his father, not for himself), but this last attempt in 1745-46 was also a failure. He was completely defeated at the Battle of Culloden in April 1746, a price of 30,000 pounds was placed on his head, and he had to wander and hide until he managed to escape to France in September of that year. The fate of the House of Stuart was sealed, the Scots could no longer wear the kilt, and the calm system was dissolved.

Mary Stuart, Queen of Scots, mother of James I, the first Stuart on the English throne, had Kalasarpa Yoga, and so did James I and his son, Charles I, when Oliver Cromwell beheaded as a tyrant and traitor. This ended the Stuart line until Charles II, after eleven years in exile, became the first king under the Restoration. Charles II did not have Kalasarpa Yoga, nor did any of his Stuart successors, the last of whom was Anne.

The ill-effects of Kalasarpa Yoga were very evident in the lives of Mary, James I, Charles I and Prince Charles Edward. Mary’s whole life was a series of misfortunes. Her first husband, King Francis II of France, died early;  her second husband, Henry Stuart (Lord Darnley), father of James I, was strangled to death; and her third husband, James Hepburn (Earl of Bothwell), was driven into exile a month after the marriage and died insane in a prison in Norway. In June 1567, deprived of her last husband, she was forced to abdicate the Scottish throne in favour of her infant son, and was imprisoned in a castle in a lake. Not until 20 years later, however (February 1587) was she finally relieved of her miseries at the block.

James I became involved in religious disputes during his reign as King of England, and his life was overshadowed by the fate of his parents. His son and successor, Charles I, became further embroiled irreligious disputes and the Bishops War and his well known quarrels with Parliament over the royal prerogative. Prince Charles Edward’s marriage was rather unhappy. His wife having left him, he took up with a mistress by whom he had an illegitimate daughter. He died a broken alcoholic on January 31, 1788.

Know About Kalasarpa Yoga Part 2

Dr. Shanker Adawal

Part 2

The most powerful Western ruler of his time, he was beset by three great enemies – France, Protestantism and the Moslem Turks. His scattered possessions brought wars and problems as well as resources and money. He was too busy with wars to stave off Luther and the Protestants. He fought France in five wars – between 1525 and 1552 – and the last one was still raging after he retired and died. He suffered much misery and frustration owing of his Kalasarpa Yoga, and any dreams he had of a universal, unified Catholic empire, came to naught. His loose-joined confederacy could not become a true European hegemony. Weary, half sick and disheartened, he abdicted at the end of October 1555, dividing his possessions between hi son, Philip II, and his brother, Ferdinand I, who became Holy Roman Emperor. He retired to a house near a monastery in Spain, where he died on the last day of September 1558.

Another good example of a horoscope of chief of state is that of King Charles XII of Sweden, whose birth time was given in the recently published biography by R. M. Hatton.

The king was busily engaged in the battlefield during most of his reign (November 1697 to December 1718). Persia, Denmark, Norway, Poland and Russia all plotted against Sweden and in 1700 the Great Northern War was launched and ended only some two years at his death, with the Peace of Nystad (1721), which forced Sweden to relinquish nearly all her possessions. In July 1709, the entire Swedish army of 18,000 men was captured by Peter I (the Great) of Russia and Charles fled to Turkey, where he spent five years in exile and was then forced to leave. At his death in Norway on December 11, 1718 by an enemy bullet, Sweden was impoverished, many lives had been lost, her struggle for an empire ceased and she was no longer an important European country. The ambitions and futile wars, sometimes instigated by Charles himself, came to naught due to his Kalasarpa Yoga.

The horoscope of Louis Napoleon III of France furnishyes another instance where the head of state and his country suffer together owing to Kalasarpa Yoga in his horoscope. In his geniture you will notice that Rahu is above the horizon, both from the Lagna and Chandra Lagna.

He founded and wrecked the second Napoleonic empire. Like the preceding Charles V and Charles XII, he was a dreamer, had imperial ambitions for his county, but also had some good intentions. After he became Emperor on December 2, 1852, he got involved in several wars: tried to establish an empire in Mexico with his brother at the helm, only to see him assassinated; and was badly defeated by Persia in 1870. He was then required to abdicate in favour of a republic and went into exile in England, where he died  on January 9, 1873.

General John Churchill, 1st Duke of Mariborough, was not a chief of state, though through his wife, a great friend of Queen Anne, and through his son-in-law, the Lord High Treasurer, he wielded great influence and was virtual ruler of England from about 1702-10.

Know About Kalasarpa Yoga Part 1

Dr. Shanker Adawal

Part 1

The Kalasarpa yoga is fairly common and is found in the natives of both great and small. It is, indeed, one of the most glaring and obvious Yogas or planetary pattern sin horoscopy. The author’s research on it, though limited, has led to the following conclusions:

(1) The yoga applies to mundane as well as personal horoscopes. In the mundane sense, it may be the nation’s horoscope or it may be the horoscope of the currently ruling chief of state (monarch, dictator, prime minister of president).

(2) The yoga is formed when all the five planets and two luminaries known to the ancients are enclosed on one side of the nodal axis; but it does not seem to matter if one or more planets are in conjunction with Rahu or Kethu, nor does it seem to matter if Rahu is above the horizon from the Lagna or Chandra Lagna.

(3) Rahu and Kethu have to do primarily with the family by bringing ruination of the family in personal horoscopes and ruination of the whole country (millions of families) in mundane horoscopes. Some might wonder how the lunar Nodes could affect or relate to the family. The explanation probably lies in the fact that the Nodes are involved in eclipses of the Sun and the Moon (father and mother, respectively) which are regarded as dreadful and malefic.

(4) In personal horoscopes of those with Kalasarpa Yoga, if the native is chief of state, he suffers loss of population or territory in wars. Or becomes involved in disputes, or is forced into exile. If not a chief of state, but married, he usually loses his spouse or one or more children. If unmarried, he suffers from delays, tensions, frustrations, increase of enemies, disputes with superiors, the professional life is unsteady, and he may become suddenly entrapped in unfortunate situations from which he cannot easily extricate himself. However, the yoga does not impair the mental faculties and probably has little effect on the physical health and longevity.

(5) The details of the yoga may be most keenly felt during the Rahu or Kethu Dasa or Bhukti, or when they transit the Ascendant, the Moon or the Sun. It appears, however, that the Yoga acts  more like a Nabhas Yogas – that is, its effects are felt generally throughout life.

An instance of Kalasarpa Yoga in a national horoscope is that of the Independence Chart of India. Since this chart and its effects are well known to readers, it will not be reproduce and commented on here.

An excellent illustration of Kalasarpa Yoga in the horoscope of a ruler is Charles V Emperor of the only Roman Empire (King Charles I of Spain).

The son of Philip I (the Handsome, Duke of Burgundy and Archduke of Austria, and of Joan (the mad), daughter of King Ferdinand II of Aragon and Isabella I of Castile, he inherited four major dynasties by age 19.

In 1504, his mother had inherited the throne of Spain, but an imbecile gone insane, she was unable to rule and so her father and husband assumed the regency until March 1516, when Charles became King. At the end of September 1506 his father  had died, leaving him Austria and the Hapsburg lands, Burgundy, Luxemburg, the Franche-Comte and Low Countries, with the right to contest for the Emperorship of the Holy Roman Empire. Through his mother, he received not only Spain, but Naples, Sardinia, Sicily and the Spanish-American colonies – Cuba, Mexico – from the Bay of Honduras along the shores of Darien and South America to the Rio de la Plata and Florida. In 1519, partially through bribes, he was elected Holy Roman Emperor over King Frances I of France, and also became “King of the Romans” (Germany).

Planets and Work in Vedic Astrology Part 3

Dr. Shanker Adawal

Part 3

In the horoscope of August rodin(7), the sculptor, Venus is actually in a Kendra from the Moon, as more clearly seen in the tropical chart. In the sidereal chart, the lord of the 11th from the Moon is in the 3rd (art).

A more striking variation is found in the horoscope of Igor Stravinsky(8), the Russian-born composer who died recently in New York, on 6th April 1971. Venus is in the 12th from the Ascendant and the 2nd from the Moon. From the Chandra Lagna, the lord of the 11th (gains) is in the 3rd (art) and the 1st, 2nd and 3rd lords combine in the 1st. He is considered the greatest, most important and influential classical music composer of the 20th century, though he met much criticism in his early years.

But by and large, we find Venus in a Kendra for the artistic. Richard Rodgers(9), the song-writer, who often collaborates with Oscar Hammerstein II, has Venus in Taurus in the 1st in the Rasi and exalted Venus in the Navamsa. Many of his melodious songs are sung in musical plays like Oklahoma (1943), which enjoyed one of the longest runs on the Broadway stage in New York and has been produced many times elsewhere; Carousel (1945); South Pacific (1949); The King and I (1951); The Sound of Music (1959). In 1944, he received the Pulitzer Prize special citation; in 1948-49; the New York Drama Critics Circle award for South Pacific, which also received one of the longest runs on Broadway and was later made into a movie.

James P. Macgillivray(10), one of Scotland’s foremost sculptors, had Venus in a Kendra, the 7th from the Ascendant. From the Moon, the lord of the 11th (gains) is in the 3rd (art) and in conjunction with the 3rd.

The world famous Negro trumpeter, Louis Armstrong(11), has Venus in the 4th in Gemini, aspecting the 10th and the lord of the 2nd is in the 3rd.

Among painters, we find Leonardo da Vinci(12), the greatest of them all, with Venus in Taurus in the Rasi, in the 4th from the Moon and probably in a Kendra from the Ascendant, too, as the birth time was probably a little earlier than that recorded. In the Navamsa, Venus is exalted in Pisces and in conjunction ith the Moon and Jupiter. He began painting about 1472 after a three years’ apprenticeship. In addition to his extraordinary ability as a painter, he was a mathematician, a military engineer, and well versed in music, botany and hydraulics. He died in May 1519.

Another great painter, Henry Matisee (13), has Venus in friendly Aquarius in the Rasi and in friendly Scorpio in the Navamsa. He took up painting at 20 while recovering from an illness and exhibited his first successful original picture, “The Dinner Table” in 1897. In 1905, he became a public sensation with his new insight into color and his new vision of line. He was pre-eminently a colorist, using many colors, all of high intensity. He also did some sculpture, etchings and lithographs. Regarded as one of the leaders of 20th Century Western art, he died on November 3, 1954.

Gregory Peck (14), one of the most popular Hollywood actors of recent years, has Venus ascending in Taurus and in exaltation in the Navamsa. He appeared in his first film about 1943 and has been in more than forty since then. In 1962,  he was given the “Oscar” – the Academy Award-for his outstanding performance in “To Kill a Mocking Bird”.

Montgomery Clift (15), who acted on the Broadway legitimate stage in New York as well as in Hollywood movies, had Venus in friendly Scorpio in the 4th, aspecting the 10th. In January 1935, he made his debut on Broadway and switched to Hollywood about 1946. On May 13, 1956, he narrowly escaped death in an automobile accident. He died unexpectedly in his sleep of occlusive coronary arterio-selerosis some time during the early morning of July 23, 1966. Death came in the Mars Dasa, Ketu Bhukti. Mars, the Yogakaraka, is also a Badhaka and prominently placed in the 5th with the Moon, where it can give Maraka as well as yoga results.

Reginald (“Rex”) (16) Harrison, the British actor who, in 1956, starred on Broadway in New York in “My Fair Lady”, which had one of the longest runs on Broadway, has Venus in the 4th, aspecting the 10th and Vargottama in the Navamsa. He made his first stage appearance in 1924.

More examples could be given, but the importance of the planet’s Kendra position should be clear enough from these, though of course, there will always be a few exceptions requiring careful study. Planets in the 10th or aspecting the 10th are also important. We have seen that in most of these charts it was only after reading from the Chandra Lagna that a clear picture was received of the source of the native’s income. For artists, the 3rd house is the source of income. For judges, it is the 5th house, since it comes through appointment by Government executive or political or royal favour. Heneage Finch had the lords of the 2nd and 11th in the 5th; Sir Matthew Hale had the lord of the 2nd in the 5th; and Oliver Wendell Holmes had the lord of the 11th in the 5th. And since the income factor is tied to the kind of work, this factor becomes the final clincher in deciding what kind of work the native has come into the world to do.

Planets and Work in Vedic Astrology Part 2

Dr. Shanker Adawal

Part 2

A planet in a Kendra can much more easily and effectively play its role. Therefore, we first look for a planet in a Kendra. If it is exalted in the Rasi or Navamsa, or in its own or a friendly sign, and is strong Vargawise, we must consider that planet as probably affecting the occupation or profession. If it is in the 10th or aspecting the 10th the indications are even clearer.

Gulika in the 10th is a great hindrance to one’s profession or job, or to holding it after obtaining it. No planet in the 10th or aspecting the 10th is also harmful. If the 2nd and 11th lords are badly placed, the situation is made worse.

In the horoscopes of great judges, given herewith, we seek that Jupiter, ruler of judges, is in the 10th from the Moon for Heneage Finch(1), Lord Chancellor of England, during the 17th century. The Lord Chancellor is the highest judicial officer in England, comparable to the Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court. Finch was made 1st Earl of Nottingham in 1681 and died on December 28th (NS), 1682.
In the horoscope of Sir Mathew Halet(2), Lord Chief Justice of England from 1671 to 1676, Jupiter in the 2nd from the Chandra Lagna, aspects the 10th. The Lord Chief Justice is President of the King’s Bench Division, and Chief Judge among its 5 judges.

In the horoscope of Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr. (3), son of the poet-physician of the same name, Jupiter in the 2nd from the Lagna aspects the 10th. One of the greatest and most learned American judges, he published his famous treatise on the Common Law in 1881; was appointed associate Justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Court on 8th December 1882, and was made its Chief Justice on August 2, 1899; and was appointed Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court on 4th December 1902 by President Theodore Roosevelt. His memory finally failed him and he resigned by request on 12th January 1932. He died of bronchial pneumonia at 2-07 a.m., L.M.T., on 6th March 1935, in Washington, D. C., two days before his 94th birthday. He never became Chief Justice of his country’s highest tribunal, being twice by-passed, but his influence on American law has been marked and lasting.

In the horoscopes of the artistic, we find similar placements, with Venus karaka of the arts. Occasionally, one finds variations, especially in the charts of singers, musicians and composers.
The horoscopes of Madame Ernestine Schumann-Heink(4) and Joan Sutherland(5), are a case in point, providing an interesting study. Madame Schumann-Heink was a famous contralto singer and Joan Sutherland (Mrsa. Bonynge since 1954) is a famous coloratura soprano. Both were opera singers who went abroad to pursue their careers. In both charts, the Ascendant is Aries. But while Miss Sutherland-Heink had Venus in Gemini in the 3rd in conjunction with Mercury, lord of the 2nd (money) and the Sun, lord of the 5th. The 2nd and 3rd lords in compunction in Gemini in the 3rd, ruling speech and throat and art, are rather clear indications of a musical careers, yet Venus is not in a Kendra, as usual. In Miss Sutherland’s chart, from the Chandra Lagna, at the lord of the 2nd (money) is in the 3rd (throat and art) and the lord of the 11th (gains) comes to the 1st (native) in association with Saturn, lord of the 3rd (throat and art) and the lord of the 11th (gains) comes to the 1st (native) in association with Saturn, lord of the 3rd (throat and art) and the Moon, lord of the 9th (fortune).

In the horoscope of Hank Williams, Sr. (6), “the greatest name in American country music”, the lord of the 2nd is in the 3rd in association with the lord of the 3rd. Debilitated Venus goes into Aquarius, a friendly sign, in the Navamsa. Venus is in the 3rd from the Ascendant and actually in the 10th from the Moon, as more clearly seen from the tropical chart. He roses to fame in 1949 as a singer and composer. He wrote more than 150 songs, but died in the back of his car while en route to Canton, Ohio, for a performance on 1st January 1953.
